One of the holiest temple towns in India, Kedarnath is situated in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,580 meters. The town is built around the ancient Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and lies near the Chorabari Glacier, the source of the Mandakini River. A conical rock formation inside the temple represents Lord Shiva in his “Sadashiva” form. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and an integral part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Towering behind the temple are the Kedarnath Peak, Kedar Dome, and other mighty Himalayan summits.
Kedarnath’s historical significance dates back to the Mahabharata. It is believed that the Pandavas, seeking redemption for their sins, pursued Lord Shiva, who took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground here, leaving his hump behind. The remaining body parts appeared at four other locations, now worshipped as the Panch Kedar.
The best time to visit Kedarnath is from May to October. The temple remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, with the deity’s idol shifted to Ukhimath for worship.
